Jonathan Waldman was part weary, half-seasick, and fully broke when the idea for his first book, Rust, came to him. He'd been living aboard a 40-foot sailboat in San Francisco for a year, coming to terms with a romance for the sea that was failing to develop. Before then, he'd put in time at a newspaper, a website, a magazine, a radio show, a TV production company, and a couple science museums.
